The break out and peer review sessions help participants feel more comfortable. We see peer learning as an important factor for students to grow, foster friendships, build professional connection among, understand concepts more easily and to grow confidence and independence. After every session, students are required to have discussions amongst themselves as this is a clause within the service level agreement. These group discussions are based on assignments/projects that have been put in place as part of the curriculum by the tutor.
The Idea Behind Our Process - Peer Learning
As seen in most learning environments, the entire process involves teachers/tutors imparting knowledge and students digesting it. There is hardly ever any interaction between students and we believe this chasm between students is unnecessary as studies have shown that things learnt under less pressure tend to be retained longer.
Peer Learning also called horizontal learning, is a learning technique in which team work and collaboration are promoted in order to gain knowledge. Unlike the conventional learning structure where the teacher is always dishing out information, it is the learners who amongst themselves, form concepts, pool together information and answer problems without the teachers' intervention. The facilitator however is always available to help help learners during the process if necessary.
The major advantage of this learning structure is that it allows learners to focus on understanding helping learners become more effective. The spectator - performer model of traditional learning leads has a quite a few disadvantages:
Because only the teacher speaks, everyone gets only one point of view which gives no room for expression and creativity from the students
The lack of interactivity amongst students prevents easy retention of information as the opportunity to interact and share ideas is not present.
While with Peer Learning:
Students can share responses with teammates this “informal” setting will help build confidence in more formal environments.
Feedback from teammates is a major highlight of peer learning as it is incredibly personalized and tailored towards the needs of the class.
More knowledgeable students retain information better because teaching itself is one of the best was of keeping things top of mind.
How Sabilink’s Classes Are Organized
At Sabilink, we see Peer Learning as an important factor for students to grow, foster friendship, build professional connection among learners, understand concepts more easily and to grow confidence and independence. After every session, students are required to have discussions amongst themselves as this is a clause within the service level agreement. These group discussions are based on assignments/projects that have been put in place as part of the curriculum by the tutor.
The aim of this is to build a community where students can contribute, learn and teach others so there can be a collective growth for all students.
The peer learning system ensures that all Sabilink students graduate as great team players who aren’t fazed by the occasion and are great assets for whichever company they work for.
